The Benefits of Pure Soap on the Skin

By Marie-Helene Blackmore

If you want the best for your skin, look for natural, organic or pure soap. Typical commercial mass-produced soaps contain many synthetic chemicals and lathering agents. These are cheap to use and keep the manufacturer's costs low, but they can be harmful to the skin and to the environment. Savons d'ailleurs stocks soaps that are gentler, safer and soothing to the skin.

The Problem with Commercial Soaps
Many soap bars on the market today contain synthetic fragrances that can cause skin sensitivity, harsh chemicals that strip moisture from the skin, and synthetic lathering agents that can cause allergies. Parabens are synthetic preservatives that are added to many cosmetics and skincare products, but that are also linked to many health problems. Organic soaps do not contain synthetic fragrances and preservatives, or lathering agents. Natural and organic soaps are made with plant-based ingredients that are soothing to the skin and are much less likely to cause allergic reactions.

Organic soaps are generally suitable for people who suffer from skin allergies and react to commercial soaps. The natural oils and the glycerine used in organic and natural soaps condition and moisturize the skin. Natural and organic soap can also contain natural plant-based colouring agents, herbs and flowers, natural fragrances (such as essential oils that also have many healing properties) and exfoliating agents such as oatmeal, almond meal or red clay.

Pure Soaps: Marseille Soap and Aleppo Soap
Pure soap includes such famous traditional soaps as Marseille soap, manufactured in the city of Marseille in southern France, or Aleppo soap that originates from Aleppo in Syria. These pure and traditional soaps are made with an alkali, oils and fats. The reaction of the alkali with fat or oil creates glycerine, a moisturizing agent that is good for the skin. Glycerine is a valuable substance that gets sold to skin care manufacturers for use as a moisturising agent in body lotions and other skin care products.

Marseille soap has been made for centuries with simple ingredients: olive oil, sea water and alkaline ash. There are two varieties of Marseille soap, white and green; the green variety contains mainly olive oil and the white variety uses palm oil. Traditional Savon de Marseille is a gentle, pure soap that can be used daily even on dry and sensitive skin.

Aleppo soap has been handmade in Aleppo, Syria, for thousands of years. It is a hard soap at contains olive oil, laurel berry oil, alkali and water. Olive oil is moisturizing and nourishing, and it also softens the skin. Laurel oil is naturally anti-fungal, cleansing and antibiotic. Aleppo soap is used traditionally for healing wounds and many skin problems, including dermatitis, acne and eczema.

Like Marseille soap, Aleppo soap is biodegradable and does not damage the environment like chemical soaps. Pure, natural soap and organic soaps are especially suitable for sensitive skin and for anyone with skin problems.

At Savons d'ailleurs, we select soaps that are a safer choice for the skin and for the nature.
